Abstract
In The Nervous Stage, Matthew Wilson Smith moves from late Romantic theatre into melodrama, arguing that the nineteenth century “theatre of sensation” provided a model for modernist theatre, including Naturalism and Expressionism, leading to Artaud. These approaches were underpinned by a neuropsychological model of the human organism.
