Abstract
The article examines the process of development of the peat industry in Russia from the 18th century to the present day. The authors analyze the historiography of the problem, key scientific works and schools. The genesis of the process of formation of mechanical engineering in the field of peat extraction in Russia, the introduction of new technologies and modernization of the industry is investigated.
