Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze the economic and financial viability of the Engenho São João Cultural and Ecological Reference Center.   Theoretical Framework: The study presented the characterization of the area of the research object, addressing the relevant historical facts and demonstrating the project's masterplan.   Method: The research was conducted in two stages: surveying the costs, revenues and results of the mill's first year of operation, followed by a critical assessment focusing on cost-benefit and distributional impact. A qualitative approach was used, with document analysis and interviews with relevant stakeholders.   Results and Discussion: The results indicate viability in the social, patrimonial and distributive impact aspects of the mill, but point to the economic and financial unfeasibility of the project. The discussion contextualizes these results in light of the theoretical framework, highlighting the need to explore new scenarios, such as obtaining financing and developing entertainment activities.   Research Implications: The practical implications of this study include recommendations for promoting the sustainability of Engenho São João, such as the search for public-private partnerships and the diversification of revenue sources. Theoretically, it contributes to the field of historical-cultural heritage management by highlighting the challenges and possibilities faced by these enterprises.   Originality/Value: This study stands out for its integrated approach, combining economic, social and heritage analyses. Its relevance lies in its contribution to the development of sustainable strategies for the preservation and promotion of historical-cultural heritage, providing valuable insights for public and private managers in this field.
