Exploration of The Teaching and Learning Model Using the Design Thinking Method in Developing Community-Based Tourism

Abstract

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the tourism industry, leading to a shift towards community-based tourism. Therefore, new reality, innovative and effective teaching and learning models are needed for the communities.  This study investigates the utilization of the Design Thinking method in the development of community-based tourism as a teaching and learning model following the COVID-19 pandemic.   Theoretical framework: Literature in this study was based on design thinking method and its application on education and tourism.   Method: Data were collected using in-depth interview and observation. 10 informants were approached and involved during the interview consisting of 6 students majoring in tourism management and 4 tourism stakeholders who had participated actively in community development.   Results and conclusion: Overall, this study found that the design thinking method has proven to be an effective tool for solving complex problems and creating innovative solutions, and that its application in teaching and learning models for community-based tourism can help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, encourage creative thinking, and foster a collaborative learning environment.   Research implications: Design thinking method can help students develop important life skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, which are essential for success in both academic and professional settings.   Originality/value: Innovative and original solutions for tourism services are fostered by the application of design thinking.
