LOS MAMÍFEROS DE MÉXICO: DISTRIBUCIÓN Y ESTADO DE CONSERVACIÓN

Abstract

Abstract: In this paper we present an updated checklist of the complete mammal fauna of Mexico, including all the native and introduced terrestrial and marine species that have been reported for the country. With 504 species, Mexico has one of the most diverse mammalian faunas of the world, second only to Indonesia in terms of number of species. There are 147 endemic species and the rest are a combination of species of Nearctic and Neotropical affinities in similar proportions. The conservation status of species indicates that there are severe environmental problems, because eight species have disappeared in the last century, and 202 are classified in one of the categories of conservation concern. Finally, there are three introduced species that have become established in the country.Resumen: En este trabajo presentamos una lista actualizada de los mamíferos terrestres, marinos e introducidos de México. Con 504 especies, se considera que el país tiene una de las faunas más ricas del mundo, de las cuales 147 son endémicas y el resto es una combinación de elementos neárticos y neotropicales en proporciones casi iguales. El estado de conservación de los mamíferos indica que hay problemas ambientales severos, ya que ocho especies se han extinguido o desaparecido en el último siglo, y 202 se encuentran clasificadas en alguna categoría de riesgo. Finalmente, hay tres especies introducidas que tienen poblaciones silvestres ya establecidas.Palabras clave: distribución, diversidad de especies, endemicidad, conservación, mamíferos,México.
