Abstract

Abstract Intracarcass pressure buildup is generally considered to contribute significantly to separation failures in tubeless tires. This study demonstrates the effect of internal pressure in the cord area on the durability of two-ply rayon tubeless tires. A practical mathematical model has been developed to describe the mechanism of intracarcass pressure build-up and to indicate the effect of liner properties (i.e., permeability and thickness) on this pressure. Liner permeability, thickness and heat resistance have all been shown to be dominant factors in the minimization of pressure buildup in the carcass plies of tubeless tires. In addition, the buildup of air pressure in tire cords has been shown by wheel durability tests to exert a significant influence on the service life and nature of failure of these tires.
