Abstract

Abstract The differences in the viscoelastic properties of conditioned nylon 6 and nylon 66 cords leading to higher shoulder temperatures of nylon 66 tires are reviewed and analyzed in terms of fiber structure. It is concluded that these differences are related to the differences in crystallographic behavior of the two polymers. The conclusions are based on the viscoelastic data from tire cords removed from tires and the properties recorded after mechanical conditioning to reach steady state equivalent to driving conditions. Viscoelastic data are obtained with the Allied high-strain viscoelastomer and structural interpretations are based on SAXS and WAXS analyses.
