Empirical Equations for Tire Footprint Area

Abstract

Abstract Two simple predictive equations for tire footprint area in terms of tire deflection and tire and wheel dimensional parameters found on the tire sidewall, have been empirically developed. Footprint areas calculated using these equations agreed with measured areas for a number of passenger, truck, and off-the-road tires, of both radial and bias belted constructions, indicating the general predictive usefulness of the equations. The form of one of the equations is similar to that of equations presented in the literature that were derived using different assumptions.
