Abstract
AbstractShared decision making (SDM) between doctors and patients has been deemed important when providing care. Yet, it can be difficult to achieve. Specific examples from a patient perspective are integrated with the social science literature to provide an overview of components of SDM including the role of fit, trust, information asymmetry, cognitive decision frames and balancing medical and patient outcomes. Consideration of these issues should facilitate higher quality SDM conversations.
