1. 2. Alsace-Lorraine had become part of the German Empire as a result of the French-German war in, 1871 . The newly established faculty of medicine in Strassbourg included several well known German professors. In the medical faculty for example Wilhelm Waldeyer taught anatomy, Adolf Kussmaul internal medicine, Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen pathology and Felix Hoppe-Seyler physiological chemistry.
