Abstract
Based on fieldwork and examination of herbarium specimens, a new Andean species, Merostachys nigricans, from the humid montane forest of Bolivia is described and illustrated. We provide notes about distribution, habitat, ecology, conservation status, phenology, common names, uses, and taxonomic affinities with M. ramosa and M. yungasensis. A distribution map is also included. The presence of an unusually black internal surface of basal internodes distinguishes it from all other species in the genus and gives rise to its name.
