Abstract
Abstract
The paper draws up a map situating the surviving epinicia in the various cities where they were performed and discussing the eventual relationship between said performances and the civic context (or part of it) to which they were addressed. This issue is approached on various levels. In particular, the nature of the city is considered and, with a special attention to clients and recipients of the epinicion, an attempt is made to assess the extent to which the city is a strong political structure, featuring a collective identity and shared values and demanding loyal behaviour towards fellow citizens.
