5. 5. Cavitation is apparently not peculiar to liquids. It occurs also in gases under certain conditions related to the relative speeds of the gas molecules and a moving body. This effect has been theoretically worked-out for meteorites entering the earth's atmosphere and for the earth entering the neutral ionized stream of solar gas.
