1. 2Cf.Joseph, and Palombara ,Interest Groups in Italian Politics.Princeton University Press, 1964, ch. IX. As defined by La Palombara, parentelainvolves a "relatively close and integral relationship between certain associational interest groups and the politically dominant party", La Palombara, p.306. Such a relationship makes possible a highly partisan and effective interest group intervention in the bureaucracy and influences the very structure of that bureaucracy.
2. 4A policy (law, administrative act, political platform) may be said to be particularistic "when it advocates treatment for specific subjects that does not fall within the general rules established for the category to which the subjects belong". Di Palma , p.13 . The contrary of particularistic is categorical.
3. 5On the distinction between patron-client tie and party-directed patronage, cf. Alex Weingrod: "Patrons, Patronage and Political Parties ", Comparative Studies in Society and History (1968 ). A definition of the patron-client relationship mainly based on the anthropological literature is: James C. Scott; "Patron-Client Politics and Political Change in Southeast Asia."American Political Science Review(March 1972). Scott writes: "The patron-client relationship - an exchange relationship between roles - may be defined as a special case of dyadic (two person) ties involving a largely instrumental friendship in which an individual of higher socio-economic status (patron) uses his own influence and resources to provide protection and/or benefits for a person of lower status (client) who, for his part, reciprocates by offering general support and assistance, including personal services, to the patron". For a discussion of the dyadic model of social interaction see G. Foster, "The Dyadic Contract in Tzintzuntzan: Patron-Client Relations", American Anthropologist 65 (1963), 1280-1294.
