Abstract

Abstract A study of the pharmacological properties of glycyrrhetinic acid, or glycyrrhetic acid, a new anti-inflammatory drug from liquorice, shows it has an extremely low toxicity and is non-irritant to the skin. It has no adverse effects on the heart, circulation or respiration and shows no glucocorticoid-like activity. In large doses in animals it produces water retention, slight sodium retention and an increased excretion of potassium. These effects are not seen with smaller doses used in man.
