A colorimetric method is described for the determination of chloral hydrate, particularly in the presence of its decomposition products. Quinaldine ethiodide reacts with chloral hydrate in alkaline solution to produce a stable, blue cyanine dye. Chloroform, trichloracetic acid and formic acid do not react under the conditions described. The colour produced conforms to the Beer-Lambert law up to 100 μg./10 ml. of reaction mixture.
