ATYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTICS: EXPERIENCE AND USE IN THE ELDERLY

Abstract

SUMMARYThe use of antipsychotics is common in the elderly. Typical antipsychotics are not without risk, especially in tardive dyskinesia, which, when balanced against relatively low efficacy, make their use debatable. Atypical antipsychotics have much less in the way of side‐effects and are much less likely to induce tardive dyskinesia. However, there is much less in the published literature about the efficacy of these drugs in the elderly and how best to use them in primary psychosis, Parkinson's disease and the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. This review attempts to summarise the current literature and make some tentative recommendations for each of the commonest atypicals, based on the current evidence.
