The "Neue Wache," for example, is a Berlin memorial for the victims of war and dictatorship, including fallen soldiers in the two world wars, resisters against both fascism and communism, and Jewish, homosexual, and Sinti victims of totalitarian regimes. The explanatory tablet says, "From 1816 to 1818 the King of Prussia William III had the Neue Wache built.... The royal guards were quartered here from 1818 to 1918. In 1931 the Prussian government transformed the Neue Wache ... into a monument for the memory of soldiers fallen during World War I.... Just before the end of World War II, the Neue Wache was severely damaged by bombardments. From 1960 the restored building was used by the GDR as a memorial for victims of fascism and militarism....
