3. 5. NUHKW and NUUFLAT decided to merge in October 1990. There was no ballot of the membership on the merging of these two unions as to which of the two reigning General Secretaries should occupy that position in the new collective body. Mrs McGrath removed the need for a ballot by stepping down from the General Secretaryship and became Deputy General Secretary of the merged NUKFAT, and thus one female General Secretaryship disappeared. SOGAT '82 and the NGA had a ballot on 20 May 1991. The consequence of the ballot was that Ms Dean, lost by 5, 795 votes, and became the Deputy General Secretary of the GPMU.
