Abstract
The text of the Inter‐Society Color Council Technical Report 78–2, “Guide to Material Standards and their Use in Color Measurement,” is summarized. It is recognized that accurate standardization is essential if color‐measuring instruments are to produce useful results. Standardization may be divided into the steps of calibration, performance testing, and diagnostic testing. This article discusses the factors affecting instrument performance. Then it gives the types of material standards used in standardization and their characteristics. Tables of the sources of standard materials and calibration services may be found in the complete report, available from the Office of the Secretary, Inter‐Society Color Council.
