Abstract

AbstractAn outbreak of Rubus stunt disease occurred in a berry production area in South‐West Portugal. Both wild and cultivated blackberry plants showed symptoms. Macropsis spp. (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) are recognized vectors of the phytoplasma responsible for this disease in Rubus plants. Surveys were conducted in 2016, 2017 and 2018 to look for the vector. All Macropsis specimens collected belonged to M. scotti Edwards and evidence suggests that it had a vectoring role in this outbreak. Owing its monophagy on blackberry plants, it is not likely that it will transfer the disease to the raspberry crop, which is far more economically important in the region than blackberry production.
