Abstract
The oxidation of skatole with potassium persulfate has been shown to produce a mixture of potassium 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-skatolyl sulfates, together with 3-methyl-oxindole, o-aminoacetophenone, o-formamidoacetophenone, and a number of unidentified products. All four isomeric skatolyl hydrogen sulfates can be hydrolyzed to the corresponding hydroxyskatoles by hot dilute mineral acid; however, only the 5-, 6-, and 7-isomers were hydrolyzed by "glusulase", a commercially available sulfatase preparation.
