Abstract
Dominance relationships among bighorn rams (Ovis canadensis) were studied over a 2-year period to quantify structure and development. Rams exhibited a stable, linear hierarchy that was strongly correlated with age. Dominance relationships were not evident until rams were at least 1 year old. Individuals gained in rank as they grew older and by fighting their way up the rank order. Rams aged 4–7 years interacted at the highest rates. After 10 years of age rams declined rapidly in condition, spent more time alone, and interacted less frequently with other rams.
