Abstract
In hypophysectomized goldfish, prolactin injections caused an increase in both number and size of the epidermal mucous cells. In contrast, the effects of prolactin injections in intact fish varied seasonally; in summer the growth and new formation of mucous cells were slightly inhibited; in the late autumn, however, the mucous cells of prolactin-injected intact goldfish increased slightly in size but there was no significant change in cell number. The action of prolactin on the mucous cells of goldfish has been discussed and the possibility of a seasonal variation of prolactin secretion considered.
