Abstract

Substituted o-nitrohalobenzenes react in aprotic solvents in the presence of powdered potassium hydroxide with deoxybenzoin to form corresponding nitroarylated deoxybenzoins. The latter on reduction form substituted 2,3-diphenylindoles which under certain conditions undergo oxidation with atmospheric oxygen to form 2,3-diphenylindolenyl-3-hydroperoxides.
