Abstract
Kerr constants have been measured at 632.8 nm for the non-polar liquids benzene, p-xylene, and mesitylene and the polar liquids chlorobenzene and toluene from just above their freezing points up to room temperature. The temperature dependence of the molar Kerr constants, mK, have been determined for all of the liquids. For the non-polar liquids, the second molecular hyperpolarizability could be obtained from the linear plots of mK against T−1. Such plots for the polar liquids are non-linear but curves have a similar shape.
