Abstract
The [Formula: see text] of the skin of young white rats was determined and the influence of pH, temperature, calcium, and different substrates studied. When pyruvate-2-14C was used as substrate radioactivity appeared in the respiratory CO2, acetoacetate, and the lipid and protein fractions of the skin. Addition of unlabelled pyruvate or Krebs cycle intermediates reduced the radioactivity of the respiratory CO2. Malonate added to the incubation medium had no effect on the radioactivity of the respiratory CO2, but resulted in a marked increase in the amount of radioactivity of acetoacetate C1.
