Abstract
The probability density for the Allan variance of stochastic processes is derived. Numerical evaluation is performed for sample sets varying from three to eight members for white- and flicker-noise processes. Representation of the results by a chi-squared distribution is discussed. Effective degrees of freedom are established for each case.
