Abstract
We have confirmed the finding of others that the spontaneous running activity recorded in standard revolving activity cages under constant conditions of light and temperature is markedly reduced by castration of male rats in early adulthood. Activity could, however, be returned to the high precastration levels by the implantation of testosterone propionate pellets which are slowly absorbed to give a continuous supply of the hormone. Testosterone pellets also inhibited the decline of activity with age in 'normal' rats.
