Abstract
The deliberate application of the methodology of contemporary molecular genetics to problems in bacterial systematics has lead to a broad new understanding of the evolutionary history of both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In this review, I discuss some of the major conclusions of this endeavour and try to predict future directions.
