Abstract
To carry out reciprocal crosses between birch species which vary by several weeks in their time of anthesis, the period of pollen viability has been determined for three species, Betula populifolia, B. cordifolia, and B. papyrifera. Pollen viability decreased from 85–95% at the time collected to 32–44% after being stored at room temperature (23–27 °C) for 30 days and to 1.0–1.5% after 60 days. In contrast, pollen germination for pollen stored at 2–5 °C for 105 days fell only to 46.0% for B. populifolia and 20.5% and 21.5% for B. cordifolia and B. papyrifera, respectively.
