Abstract
The incorporation of a number of compounds into scopoletin glucoside was measured with 14C. A biosynthetic pathway from phenylalanine involving caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and glucosidoferulic acid seems to best fit the observations. An alternate route involving esculetin and cichoriin as intermediates was shown not to function in tobacco leaves. Preparations of [3-14C]scopoletin, [3-14C]esculetin, and [2-14C]4′-glucosidocaffeic acid are described.
