Abstract
We fumigated plants of Funaria hygrometrica and Hypogymnia physodes with 13, 65, and 130 parts per billion (ppb) of hydrofluoric acid for 4, 8, and 12 h and then 13 ppb for 36, 72, and 108 h. We examined the macroscopic and microscopic changes, the quantity of fluoride absorbed, and the capacity of these plants to recuperate 3 weeks after fumigation. Results show that at concentrations of 65 ppb/12 h the moss and the lichen show chlorotic spots and already some chloroplasts start to disintegrate and plasmolysis occurs. After 3 weeks of recuperation the Funaria had lost between 26 and 36% and the Hypogymnia between 36 and 47% of the fluoride accumulated.
