Abstract
An analysis of the braking performance of a tractor-trailer unit is presented in this paper. The analysis revealed that there existed a wide variation in the ratio of braking force to vertical load values on each axle of the tractor-trailer. Braking efficiency was higher for the loaded condition than for an empty tractor-trailer. At all initial speeds, the trailer axles attained the maximum ratio of braking force to vertical load and were the first to lock up. Key words: highway, safety, heavy vehicles, braking performance, tractor-trailers.
