Abstract
A series of chemically related para-disubstituted aromatic solutes have been dissolved in two type II DM systems. The Saupe matrix elements of order have been determined for the solutes and the degrees of order of some segments in the amphiphiles have been derived from deuterium quadrupole splittings. The comparison of deuterium quadrupole splittings in uncontaminated mesophases with those containing the solutes leads to the conclusion that four solutes are located in the bilayer disk of the component micelles of one meosphase. A consideration of the structure and alignment of the disc micelles leads to absolute sign attribution for degrees of order of detergent segments and matrix elements for solute axes. A consideration of the orientations of the solute axes with respect to the mesophase director suggests the type of molecular interactions and motions which apply to solutes.
