Abstract
The energy loss of 400-keV protons and 800-keV helium ions transmitted through thin gold crystals has been studied. The effects of mosaic spread in gold crystals grown on sodium chloride substrates and the effects of twinning in crystals grown on mica substrates are examined in detail. Conditions and measurements necessary to minimize such crystal effects are described. The directional dependence of the relative intensities of resolved components in the energy-loss spectra has been measured. The results are used to evaluate suggestions of the origin of structure in the energy loss of transmitted particles.
