Abstract
Particulate and soluble forms of trehalose-hydrolysing enzymes were demonstrated in mitochondrial and cytosolic fractions of thoracic musculature from Periplaneta americana. Treatment with snake venom or phospholipase A2, in the presence of Ca2+, solubilizes 90–95% of the mitochondrial trehalase activity. Comparison of the substrate specificities of the mitochondrial and cytosolic enzymes indicates that the solubilized mitochondrial enzyme is specific to trehalose whereas the cytosolic enzyme functions as a general α-glucosidase.
