THE ROLE OF Hg 63P0 ATOMS IN MERCURY PHOTOSENSITIZATION. I. REACTIONS IN THE PRESENCE OF NITROGEN

Abstract

A quantitative investigation has been made of the factors affecting the concentration of mercury 63P0 atoms formed by collisions of the second kind between mercury 63P1 atoms and nitrogen. The absorption of 4047 Å (63P0 − 73S1) and the emission of 2656 Å (63P0 − 61S0) were studied in the pressure range 0.06 mm to 140 mm. Both types of measurement indicate that the forbidden line arises from spontaneous as well as collision-induced emission. The lifetime for spontaneous emission is estimated to be 4.2 × 10−4 sec.
