Abstract
This presentation contains a compilation and discussion of the evidence for the capacities of various phocid seal organs to resist the unfavorable effects of severe hypoxia by conversion to anaerobic metabolism. Tissues for which experimental evidence has been obtained include skeletal muscle, kidney, heart, and brain. The argument is made that these capacities represent a reserve for tolerance of the asphyxia of long dives.
