Abstract
A bunch of charged particles is considered to be moving in a long conducting tube subject to external time-independent focusing forces. The density of the particles in the bunch and the electromagnetic field of the bunch of charge in the conducting tube are determined simultaneously.The parameters of the idealized accelerator may be obtained from those of an actual machine design, so that predictions of bunch shape and effects of space and image charges on phase areas (emittances) may be made.
