Abstract
An arc stabilized using an axial magnetic field is produced in low-pressure helium by discharging a delay line between two metal electrodes. Several diagnostic techniques are used to measure the characteristics of the arc. The parameters of the cylindrical plasma are as follows: pulse length 2 ms, length 0.227 m, radius 0.03 m, electron density 4 × 1020 m−3, electron temperature ≤ 60 eV, ion temperature ≤ 20 eV. The arc is a rich source of vacuum-ultraviolet line radiation coming from multiply charged impurity ions. Based on a choice of typical parameters, we present a simple self-consistent model to explain the observed phenomena.
