Abstract
An analysis is made of the mathematical means that are available to describe finite tectonic displacements. It is shown that, from field observations, the principal axes of a tensor can be found which is related to the strain tensor in finite strain theory. The trajectories of this tensor yield a graphic picture of the local deformations; if certain averages are calculated for the local deformation, the over-all regional displacement pattern can be established.
