Abstract
A chytrid with spherical, multipored sporangia, and with apophysis and rhizoids, isolated from an Arctic soil sample is described as Phlyctochytrium arcticum n. sp. It grew best at 20 C and pH 5.8–7.2. It requires exogenous thiamine, grew in ammonium nitrogen, but not in nitrate or nitrite, and used five of seven amino acids tested. It grew in glucose, fructose, trehalose, maltose, mannose, cellobiose, glycerol, and starch of 18 carbon sources tested.
