Abstract
We present a second-order approximation equation for the trajectory of a charged particle in a 1/r electrostatic field. Then a method to evaluate the curve of the energy distribution of the electrons transmitted by an electrostatic spectrometer is proposed. This method is used to evaluate the energy spectrum of two particular cylindrical spectrometers, whose utilization is widely spread in many laboratories. The properties of the electron beam, such as the electron distribution as a function of the exit angle, are studied with the aid of the proposed method of calculation. Also we study the method of analyzing or measuring the electron energy spectrum, as done by experimenters, in order to evaluate the precision of these measurements.
