Abstract
It is shown that Maxwell's equations together with some commonly used approximations to the magnetodynamics equation of a ferrite imply that a peculiar form of electromagnetic loss may occur at ferrite–air–metal junctions. This loss, which is called "intrinsic", is non-zero even when the media involved are formally non-lossy. It is shown that an unusual loss in the problem of input to a ferrite-loaded waveguide is an intrinsic loss. Intrinsic loss is put forward as a means of resolving the thermodynamic paradox of Button and Lax.
