Abstract
Saccharomyces fragilis exhibited extensive pseudomycelium development when growing beneath cover glasses at 10–30 °C on solid media containing various carbon sources, and produced four types of spore. Evidence is presented that pseudomycelium development was not stimulated by anaerobic conditions, but probably resulted from the accumulation of metabolic by-products. Budding growth without pseudomycelium occurred beneath cover glasses at 35–45 °C on medium with 1–10% (but not 0.1%) glucose, or in the presence of cysteine. Cystine or thioglycollate did not prevent pseudomycelium development.
