Abstract
The radiolysis free ion yields Gfi0 and electron penetration ranges bGP in the liquids carbon dioxide and carbon disulfide are much larger than would be predicted by extrapolation from earlier studies of unsaturated hydrocarbons. In the isoelectronic, nonpolar compounds carbon dioxide and propadiene at 212 ± 4 K Gfi0 = 0.19 and 0.022, respectively, with bGP = 116 and 37 Å. In carbon disulfide Gfi0 = 0.44 ± 0.02, independent of temperature over the range 169 to 354 K; the electron penetration range appears to increase with decreasing temperature in this liquid. In the unsymmetrical, polar compound carbonyl sulfide, Gfi0 = 0.089 and bGP = 37 Å at 214 K; the behavior is similar to that in ethers.
