Abstract
The metallic ions that are produced in the arc that occurs when a contact is broken in a vacuum have been studied. The energy spread amongst such ions is significantly smaller than for the ions produced in a vacuum spark. Also, the relative ionization efficiencies for both singly and doubly charged ions can be greatly different in the two cases. The vacuum arc may prove of use in solid-source mass spectroscopy.
