Abstract
The chromosome complements of 22 species of Stratiomyidae, 1 of Rhagionidae and 1 of Xylomyidae are described. Chromosome numbers range from 2n = 8 to 16 with 16 as the most common number and presumably the primitive number. The 56 chromosome complements averaged 55.2 μ, in TCL which seems to increase with increasing number of chromosomes. The similarity of the Stratiomyidae and the Tabanidae regarding chromosome numbers and range is noted.
