Abstract
The theory of character convergence in bird song has been related to competition and interspecific spacing. Criteria for recognizing character convergence in song are proposed. Work on one widely held example of character convergence in Thryothorus wrens has shown no supporting evidence for the theory. A review of the evidence in a number of other supposed cases of character convergence shows that important documentation is lacking.
